On the occasion of the 6th ener.CON Europe in Berlin, we.CONECT has bestowed the renowned ener.CON Europe award for the fourth time. The prize honors projects that achieved outstanding performances in energy efficiency. Experts from Covestro, Siemens and Carlsberg have formed this year´s jury that evaluated and nominated the submitted projects. Jury member Dr. Martin Kruska, Head Business Development Europe Sustainability & Energy Management at Siemens guided through the evening.
Our Charity Partner for the ener.CON Award 2017 was DKMS – a global charity organization aiming to fight blood cancer. DKMS recruits stem cell donors to save patients’ lives and is committed to providing all blood cancer patients with access to appropriate treatment.
Who won the race for the award?
The third price went to Sisecam for the project Organic Rankine Cycle Waste Heat Recovery, presented by Gürhan Dural. The turkish company is mainly active in glass and chemicals production and developed a new technology for flat glass furnaces to recover thermal energy and use it as an electrical energy supply. This will reduce the carbon footprint during production.
Dr. Christian Imgrund and BMW took the second position on the podium. He receive the prize for the development of a new and holistic concept for an energy efficient “greenfield”-plant. As automotive plants are one of the most energy consuming plants in the world BMW focused on improving the processes in order to reduce the energy consumption. The project aims at identifying plant locations with a minimum requirement of energy (climate zones based, availability of renewable energies) and developing a perfect structure layout for an entire automotive plant (press shop, body shop, paint shop assembly shop and logistics).
The winner of the evening was SCA. Olli Härkönen proudly took the price for the project mesave – Material and Energy Savings and Efficiency. SCA turned away from its technology-oriented approach to energy efficiency and started generating a company-wide culture of resource conservation, designed bottom-up by operational experts. The goal is to speed up energy & CO2-savings via behavioral change and smart investments, integrate raw material and resource efficiency with energy savings program and become the sustainability benchmark in the hygiene industry. The mesave program is powerful and visual in SCA’s manufacturing sites globally and supported by IT-systems sharing all best practices transparently in real time, dedicated Capex pot for energy and material efficiency investments.
